UPDATE ON UNILAG MATTERS.
And of the Greatest Akokaites!!!
On the 29th of April, 2016;
A meeting was held between the Unilag Mgt and the leadership of NANS JCC led by Comr. Sulaimon Sanusi alongside a delegation of student activists from unilag; Hon. Comr. Ojo Temitope(Faculty of Education) , Hon. Kingsley(Sandwich), Hon. Ifunaya (College of Medicine) and Comr. Osinuga Samuel(Faculty of Sciences).
The meeting which started at about 1:15pm was premised on the following agenda as follows;
•Indemnity Forms
•Suspension of Ulsu(SEC & SLC)
•Examination Date
•On Indemnity/Undertaking Forms:
The mgt stated that, the forms are not of bad intent but in the good interest of student populace in the university of Lagos. During the intellectual discuss, mgt further said that, there have been a progressive compliance on submission. It was made known at the meeting by mgt that, there is a high tendency of extension of deadline for submission of the indeminity/undertaking forms considering the public holiday on Monday. However, student leaders asked questions on the issue of long queues at the gate and undertaking forms as a criteria for entrance into campus, the mgt said, there will be no queues as from Monday since all students have been mandated to resume on 2nd of May,2016, invariably, there will be free access to the university campus.
•Suspension of Ulsu:
The mgt emphatically stated at the meeting that, ULSU was not proscribed as against information gathered on the media. However, the suspension remains a temporal measure to enable the leadership of ULSU have a deep reflection on lessons learnt and where the leaders might have gone wrong. The mgt further explained that, once the resumption process goes on smoothly without disrupt of activities in the next two weeks and beyond, lifting of the suspension would evidently become inevitable for consideration, as there are ongoing investigation on certain allegations. Infact, the mgt reckoned with the essence of student unionism on campus.
•Examination Date:
The mgt made it clear that, based on standards practised examination was meant to commence 17weeks after resumption. Initially, the proposed date was to be within second week of April but unfortunately after proper scrutiny this was considered as an error. But following the closure of the school, the exam date 9th of May was decided by the Senate Council and extension of exam date can only be reversed by the decision of the Senate Council.
•Summary
The demands by the students leaders from the mgt are as follows:
•Clarification of content of the indemnity/undertaking forms and extension of deadline for submission
•Lift of suspension on Ulsu
•Extension of Examination Date
•Results
1.The mgt assured that, there were no intentions to infringe on the fundamental rights of students, that no part of the forms is of bad intent as every clause is in the good interest of the students and progress of the university at large.
2. Once the resumption process goes on smoothly, there are high hopes that, the union would be fully reinstated to carry out its constitutional duties and activities.
3. Extension of the exam date is not impossible but could only be achieved upon reversal in decision by the Senate Council.
In conclusion, we hereby urge the entire student populace of the University of Lagos to remain calm and law abiding to await the position of NANS JCC as extensive efforts are ongoing to bring normalcy to campus and ensure all issues are fully resolved.
Thank you.
